It's not broken, but it is sprained. I'm relieved, and having heard a loud crack and two loud pops before I buckled to the ground, I firmly believe that God put his healing hand on me.
It was my first year to run the Holliday Park Trail Run, and I was 5 miles into the 5.25 mile course. I was next to the pond at the end of the ravine and only had one more ascent. I was feeling great, my legs were thanking me for having trained so hard in CyclePump this month, and I was already thinking of what I'd fix the kids for lunch when I got home.
Until I heard the crack and pops, then the rustle of myself falling into leaves, and then felt the fiery pain radiating from my ankle.
20 minutes later I was thoroughly mortified, stabilized, and heading out of the park on the back of a Kubota because it was too steep to get out any other way.
Our new friends at OrthoIndy Acute Care Clinic say it's not broken (whew!), but I'm heading back tomorrow for further exam by the orthopedist. They'll look again at a spot that looked like it could be a fracture, and then do some tests to see about any damage of the tendons and ligaments.
I'm trying not to get ahead of myself, to not feel sorry for myself.
If I can't run the Mini with Chris on our anniversary, I will be very, very disappointed. But it won't be the end of the world, and I will try to find something else positive to focus on...
For now, I'm already grieving the end of my Saturday night Mexican/Pizza/Pasta dinners that taste so delicious after a 10 mile run. And I'm trying not to go crazy, or drive my family crazy, while I'm on bedrest and have to wear this crazy boot.
Caroline and I have been some brainstorming on how we can keep this from ruining our Spring Break plans. We'll cancel the day trips to Cincinnati and Chicago (boo), but we'll stock up on RedBox movies and cans of whipped cream (yay). We'll postpone our Keystone shopping trip (boo), but we'll check out extra books from the library and get out our favorite quilts for ultimate comfort/cuddling. We'll miss riding our bikes along the Monon to BigHat Books and LaPiedad, but we'll get dressed up and put on facepaint and tattoos for optimal Tournament viewing.
It will not be what we planned, but it will surely be memorable!
